The best hacks for surviving travel from a travel journalist
The best hacks for surviving travel from a travel journalistThe best hacks for surviving travel from a travel journalistSo many people have to travel regularly for work that it seems like mora of a chore than an experience. In 2016 U.S. travelers took458.9 million domesticbusiness trips and this is expected to reach478.2 million by 2020. However, for most, traveling not only satiates their need of wanderlust, but it helps them feel more creative. You may not feel you have that actual wanderlust gene (the strong desire to travel) that so many people have, butaccording to a survey commissioned by Curio Collection, 91% of the population considers themselves to be curious and 73% of people say that traveling is their go-to outlet to express their curiosity. The survey also found that more than 90% of people take trips to learn something new, 79% consider learning something new while on vacation a priority and 55%of travelers say that vacations are primarily a way to explore, not to relax. Over 60% describe the perfect travel companion as someone who is curious. As for which group of people tends to be the most curious about travels, Millennial women come in first. They are twice as likely as general travelers to be Culturalists travelers who enjoy fine arts also.Someone who knows that need to feed her curiosity through traveling isAshlan Cousteau, a travel and entertainment journalist for E, Discovery Channel, and the Travel Channel (and she is the grand-daughter-in-law ofJacques-Yves Cousteau and daughter-in-law of Phillipe Cousteau) who partnered with theCurio Collection by Hiltonon this survey and campaign.Ladders spoke with her about making a career out of traveland also surviving it with some of her best hacks for staying healthy, happy and curious. On being curious, but not having wanderlustIts always been my lifelong goal to be and stay curious, so thats why I was a bit surprised when I found out I dont have the DRD4-7R gene, better known as the wanderlust gen e. This gene is believed to be associated with people who have a propensity for travel and discovery, and only 20% of the human population has it.On keeping sane while traveling 24/7Traveling can take a lot out of you, so I try and bring small comforts with me while I travel. For example, a favorite cashmere sweater, warm socks and even a small blanket that I always put over my hotel pillow to make it feel familiar to me. When I do get to sleep in my own bed, I try and give myself a full day to recover and do laundry, and just be in my space. Plus, when Philippe and I are able to travel together, it never feels like we are really away from home because we have each other. On knowing travel was her careerMy parents instilled a love of travel in my sister and I at a very young age. We were so lucky to grow up knowing that there was a giant world out there to explore withdifferent cultures, different languages and incredible beauty. There was a show on E called Wild On, where the host tr aveled to picturesque locations, had amazing experiences and found great food and nightlife. Once I saw that show I knew I wanted to be a host and travel the world. I graduated from the School of Journalism at he University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and while I studied hard news, I knew I needed to make my way to travel and entertainment. On how people approach travel in the year 2018 compared to the olden daysThe first difference is that flying was so different back in the day. I remember my family putting on fancy clothes to fly- dresses and blazer were a must. No yogapants back then, though the latter is so much more comfortable to fly in. A big way social media has changed traveling immensely is that now independent hotels like those that make up Curio Collection by Hilton can connect directly and instantly with their customers. Unique, one-of-a-kind experiences are growing even more important to travelers and thanks to the Internet someone can totally curate their entire trip before even reaching their destination. However, one big piece of advice I have for those traveling is while you are on vacation having a fabulous experience PUT YOUR PHONE DOWN Yes, take a photo or two, but then turn off your WiFi, be present in themoment, and truly absorb your surroundings. Thats why you went on vacation in the first place Dont waste your vacation time scrolling through Instagram. It will all be there when you get back home.On working and traveling with her husband Philippe Cousteau Jr.Traveling and working alongside my husband is truly a blessing. Philippe is my best friend, a wonderful work partner and the absolute best travel buddy. Every day we spend together is the best day. We respect each other and complement one another so well. Im the luckiest girl. When he is having an off day, I plattl up the slack and vice versa. Sometimes Im the gas and he is the brake, and some days its the other way around. We just work.On staying healthy while traveling consta ntlyI never eat airplane food because the salt alone will swell you up like a balloon. Food is really important when we travel, and we try to eat a lot of fresh veggies and fruits and stay away from meat on the road. My little secret weapon is apple cider vinegar. I always carry a 3oz bottle of it and when I feel like Im getting a sore throat I gargle with it a few times and it usually knocks out whatever it is.On your best hacks for working when traveling? My first piece of advice is to try and get on your destinations time zone as soon as you sit down on your flight. Jetlag is real, but it can be managed. The earlier you start to adjust, the better. If you are on a vacation but know you need to do work, set aside a specific hour or two every day to go through emails, then put the computer and your phone away. Most importantly, give yourself a little slack when traveling. Your co-workers will understand if you take a little longer to get back to them if you are halfway across the wo rld. When you let yourself be distracted by that important email you have to send that very moment, thats when briefcases get left in cabs, wallets get left at restaurants, or computers stay in seatback pockets when you deplane.

6 Things You Must Do Before Graduation
6 Things You Must Do Before Graduation6 Things You Must Do Before Graduation Youre a soon-to-be college graduate , and youre so consumed with, you know, graduating, that perhaps you havent realized you need to plan mora than the outfit youll wear beneath your cap and gown. In fact, theres a lot to do before you graduate. Weve turned to top college and career advisors for the six things you must do before you walk across that stage.Practice makes perfect - and you dont want to learn how to be the perfect interviewee during a real interview. Joshua Domitrovich, coordinator for career mentoring and internships at Clarion University , recommends that soon-to-be graduates begin participating in mock interviews about two weeks before a real interview. This allows students to reflect on their experiences while messing up, so that they dont mess up with the employer, he says, while adding that many career centers, including Clarion, offer mock interview services. Career c enters will tailor your mock interview to mirror the organization you are meeting and discuss how to develop questions for the end of the interview, he says. Youll walk out of your practice interview much more prepared.A generic resume just wont do, warns Jason Patel, former career ambassador at George Washington University and the founder of Transizion , a college and career-prep company. For example, he explains, a business development or communications graduate might be applying for work in the finance, nonprofit and startup sectors. He or she should look at the common keywords for job postings in each of those sectors, and if they are relevant to their experience, use them on his or her resume. The worst thing a soon-to-be graduate can do in this situation is have pertinent experience for a job but apply with a generic resume. Now that you have a resume custom-tailored for your position or industry, its time to make sure the resume itself is top-notch. No matter how confident you are in your resume, you should still have your resume reviewed by someone else - preferably a professional, says Domitrovich. This is an especially important step if you have a resume thats more than six months old. In that case, there is a good chance processes, procedures and preferences of employers have changed, Domitrovich warns. So use your career center to review your resume and ensure it is up to date and mistake free.An elevator pitch is a quick, rehearsed speech that tells someone what you have to offer as an employee. Your two-minute elevator pitch should answer the always-asked, tell me about yourself question in job interviews, Patel explains. Since this question - or one like it - is asked in the beginning, its important to demonstrate confidence and preparedness by answering smoothly. Your elevator pitch consists of what youve done, what youre doing and where youre going. This means you should discuss your qualifications and degree, what youre pursuing now an d your intermediate goals. If youre not networking , youre not working, Domitrovich says plainly. You never know who a contact is connected to and how far your network can reach. Luckily, you dont have to start your networking search from scratch. Your career center can provide access to a vast network of alumni and employers, Domitrovich says. Tapping into this network can provide opportunities to use pre-existing relationships to get your foot in the door. We encourage students to keep their career centers updated on their job search process. For example, before applying to XYZ organization, reach out to your career center to see if any alumni or a pre-existing employer relationship exists.Creating a portfolio and then putting it online can help you stand out in a major way. For relevant professions, a portfolio is a great way to gain an advantage on the competition, Patel says. Sometimes, your resume wont convey your creativity and transferable skills, but your portfolio can. Co nsider uploading writing samples, photography, designs and any other assets youve created to a single website such as WordPress. You may have to spend some time on it, but it could pay off in spades down the road.

Customer Service for Your Colleagues
Customer Service for Your Colleagues Customer Service for Your Colleagues You donât have to be on a support or service team to provide excellent customer service. In fact, rising stars in most organizations treat coworkers, managers, clients and vendors as if they were valued customers. If you want to move ahead in your accounting and finance career, think about whether your colleagues consider you a problem solver or a problem creator, a collaborator or a divider. How can you get a handle on your customer service? Start by asking yourself these five questions: 1. Do you treat your colleagues as unique individuals? For many people working in a demanding accounting role, it can be easy at times to focus only on the numbers. You may forget that people with the information you need are extremely busy professionals just like you. To give excellent customer service, be courteous and friendly in your interactions with colleagues. Make the effort to get to know people on an individual basis and develop friendships at work so you can more effectively build rapport and tailor your approach. 2. Do you ask them for feedback? Some people donât want to hear about what they could be doing better. But you canât improve if you donât know where your efforts are missing the mark. And if you donât cultivate an openness to listening to othersâ opinions, youâre less likely to hear kudos when youâve earned them. Simply put, proactively inquiring about other peopleâs experiences working with you shows you care about your job and your workplace relationships. 3. When you receive constructive criticism, do you actually listen?? Asking for feedback is a great start. Take care to listen to whatâs being said and, if the comments are on point, address them. If you arenât sure, talk to your manager about the content of the feedback to help you figure out if you or your team needs to make changes to provide better customer service. 4. Do you lend a hand when your coworker is in a jam? Weâve all been there: A back-burner project suddenly becomes the chief financial officerâs top priority. Or maybe itâs just taking longer than expected this month to get the data needed to close out the books. If you want to be regarded as a professional who gives excellent customer service to your team, volunteer to help others who are in a bind whenever your workload allows. This approach will likely come in handy down the road when you find yourself in need of assistance. 5. Do you offer potential solutions? Few workplaces reward those who always have something negative to say. The best way to become a positive contributor is to think up or find a solution to present when giving constructive criticism. Regardless of your role or level of experience, you canât go wrong by adopting a more service-oriented approach. Odds are youâll advance more easily and find new job opportunities when you establish a reputation as a team player who always provides excellent customer service.

Successful Career Planning and Management
Successful Career Planning and Management Successful Career Planning and Management A 5-step plan to turbocharge your personal brand - and career.Your career is important to you.Your brand is important to you.But they arenât working as hard as they could for you. I guarantee it. It doesnât take crazy time or energy to change that; to get your personal brand and career turbocharged.Action one: Map out your grand strategyMost people I work with are intimidated by the thought of mapping out their grand strategy because they arenât clear on exactly what they want and because they are afraid of failure. But it is extremely important to have a grand strategy for your life. To be as effective as possible, you need to see not only one, but two or three steps ahead. Tactically, this means mapping out the qualities of what you want (feelings, values, priorities and passions) first - and then fleshing out as many of the details (how, where) later.Action two: Re-frame your storiesThe most successful business people in the next decade are going to be those who are skille d at adapting their experience to new situations. In other words, they will be able to identify how the skills they have learned will help them solve new problems in different situations in the future. After all, businesses are tackling new problems at an ever-increasing pace. To do this, think about the transferable skills you have!Action three: Be your own best salesmanSuccessful people believe in themselves. Sadly, a significant number of people donât own their accomplishments enough to be their own best salesmen. We all need to give ourselves credit for our accomplishments in a way that is tactful and impactful. The key to this is to think about your audience and what they want to hear. (And then, tell them!)Action four: Invest in yourselfWith the rate of change in our society, technology and work, the most successful people are those who continually invest in themselves. Specifically those who invest in their education, health and networks. Consistent growth and learning new skills is going to be imperative to thriving in our changing economy. What can you do this week to invest in yourself?Action five: Focus on self-awarenessOne of the greatest predictors of career success is self-awareness. You need to know your strengths, your weaknesses and your biases. In fact, Iâve heard from countless executives that self-awareness is a make-or-break quality for their candidates! How to Deal With a Relationship and Career Change - The Muse
How to Deal With a Relationship and Career Change - The Muse How to Deal With a Relationship and Career Change Unemployment or changing jobs or being stuck in a career rut is stressful no matter how you look at it, but when you multiply it by two, it can really take a toll on you and your relationship. When my husband and I lost our jobs within six weeks of each other, we were in shock- and found ourselves spending a lot of time together, for better or for worse. During that harrowing period, we attempted to reinvent ourselves as professionals without losing who we were as a couple. Now that weâre both collecting paychecks again, itâs easy to see many of the mistakes we made as we navigated the rocky road back to full-time employment together. The following is my hard-won wisdom on how to handle joint career stress without losing your peace of mind or your relationship in the process. Respect Each Otherâs Methods Remember the old âopposites attract?â Well, my husband and I approached our job searches from completely different angles. I regarded it as a numbers games, sending my resume far and wide, while my husband was more strategic, cultivating connections and networking with everyone heâd ever met. When I tried to convince him to give my way a go when some of his leads didnât pan out, he insisted his strategy would eventually bear fruit. Likewise, when he suggested I get back in touch with people I hadnât spoken with in years, I hesitated. Though we were skeptical of each otherâs methods, neither of us was right nor wrong. Respect your partnerâs approach to their career, and if you can borrow whatâs working for them and incorporate it into your own game plan, all the better. Because, ultimately, both tactics led us to new positions. Photo of Liz and husband working courtesy of Liz. Work as a Team During a rough career patch, you can definitely feel isolated and alone. If thereâs an upside to facing it as a couple, itâs that youâve got a partner who is attempting to overcome the same hurdle, which means your relationship has probably never been filled with more empathy. Use that compassion to cheer each other on and be encouraging on those dark days when your inboxes seem to overflow with rejection emails. In addition to providing emotional support, you can benefit from having a ready and willing interview partner. Trust me, itâs a lot better to make mistakes in a mock interview with your significant other than with your would-be boss. Be Gentle With Each Other When youâre feeling raw and vulnerable during this time, something as small as a sideways glance can feel like a devastating slight. Though it might be tempting to offer advice, sometimes your partner may just want to vent and know that their feelings are heard and valid. Itâs important to keep communication open and figure out what makes each of you feel supported. When my husband was passed over for a position we were almost certain heâd get, I found myself saying things like, âI donât understand. How could you not have gotten it?â This ultimately wasnât helpful for either of us. People process these life events in different ways, so treat each other with care. Photo of Liz and husband courtesy of Liz. Put Away Your Pride and Get Help if You Need It Thereâs no denying that a career bump can cause your confidence to plummet while your stress level skyrockets. These factors can wreak havoc on even the most rock-solid relationship. Just remember, youâre not alone. From career counseling to marriage counseling, if this period is taking a toll on your mental health or your relationship, seek help. Having a professional third party provide strategies for navigating this difficult period can assist you in getting back on track. Though it may not feel like it while youâre in the thick of it, you will come out on the other side, and when you do, your relationship may be stronger for having weathered this challenging period nobly together.

CV vs Resume - What is the difference [+Infographic Examples]
CV vs Resume - What is the difference [+Infographic Examples] CV vs Resume s] Is Pepsi okay? Don't you just hate it when you ask for Coke and that's what you get in return? And the voice inside you screams 'NO IT'S NOT!' but all you can muster is a 'Um, can you check again? Otherwise it's alright.' On the face of it, Pepsi and Coke look the same, might even feel the same, but deep inside, you know they are not, right? The same goes for a Resume and a CV. What is a CV,and what is a resume, you ask? The two are so often used interchangeably that most of us feel that they are the same. But they are not. They are miles apart, and the lack of understanding between the two can cost you a job, or be the difference between a 150k and a 50k profile. We mean it because we have seen it. In our guide to explaining the difference between CV and Resume, We'll broadly be covering the following: To skip the details, you can directly view the differences between a resume and CV in the infographic below. What is a CV? Latin for 'course of life', it means just that. It chronicles the details of your entire academic professional career till date. Since you wouldn't want the course of your life to be limited by anything, a typical CV is not bounded by the number of pages. A CV can run from a couple of pages to more than 10 and no one will blink an eye. Broadly, a CV is used in cases where you are applying for internships, grants, scholarships, research-based profiles or academia in general. The reason for that is that a CV (as opposed to a Resume) will additionally include a detailed list of your publications (with bibliography), references, fieldwork during your graduation/postgraduation, teaching experience, presentations delivered, etc. All this is typically missing in a Resume. What is a Resume? French for 'to sum up', a Resume is a concise summary of your professional career. In most cases, it will be a 1-pager, and can go up to 2 pages in cases of professional experience exceeding 20 years or so, but that's it. A Resume can NOT exceed 2 pages, even if you've 30+ years of working experience or are Elon Musk. This crisp document (as opposed to a CV) summarizes your professional skills and achievements till date and is usually tailored to specific job applications pertaining to non-academic industries in general. The information that goes in a Resume will often by highly limited and generally include additional sections around Professional Summary, Key Skills, etc. (check out our guide to Resume Key Skills and Resume Objective for further clarity) CV vs Resume - The Difference Now that we know a basic overview of the two, let's go a bit deeper and analyze the differences on the basis of certain parameters to understand resume vs cv Basis CV Resume Origin Latin for 'course of life' French for 'to sum up' Length 4-10 pages, even 10+ in cases of extensive experience Not more than 2 (without exception) Focus Academic + Professional Background Skills + Experience Order Chronological Reverse Chronological (excluding instances of Functional Resumes) Customization Minimal. Content remains the same irrespective of the position being applied to Can be tailored to specific job profiles or organizations, especially skills While the above table broadly covers the basic difference between Resume and CV, let us go a step further and scrutinize the 3 basic parameters which governs the usage of the two. CV vs Resume: Length As discussed previously, the length of the document is a clear indicator of what to use when. We've seen professionals getting confused between the two and sending in 5-pager resumes for top-level profiles. That, in our opinion, is straight-up blasphemy. Usually, recruiters will specify whether they are expecting a resume or CV. Based on that, you can tailor the length of the document which you'll send accordingly. CV vs Resume: Objective Geographic Location The objective of where you are applying is a clear giveaway. In the US, as a rule of thumb, a CV is expected in cases where you are applying in the field of medicine, science or academia. This additionally includes applications for fellowships, grants and scholarships as well. Moreover, if you are based in the US and are seeking jobs abroad (Europe, Africa, Asia and the Middle East), you'll be expected to send a CV irrespective of the industry or nature of work you are seeking. Consequently, in the non-profit sector or in industries apart from medicine, science and academia, you'd be better suited to send a resume instead. CV vs Resume: Layout/Structure As mentioned earlier, a CV is chronological in order which details the entire history of the applicant, starting from Education to Publications, Awards, Academic Trajectory, etc. A Resume, on the other hand, is prepared in a reverse chronological order and can be tailored in accordance with the industry or job you are targeting. The format of a CV is, in most cases, pretty standard. It remains the same irrespective of the industry or job profile you are applying for. A resume can be reverse chronological or functional depending on the requirements of the job or the candidate. The layout of a resume is not written in stone and can vary. For a more in-depth understanding of resume layouts, check out our guide on Resume Layouts. CV vs Resume: A Breakdown Since a CV is more detailed and includes an extensive range of information pertaining to the candidate, let's take a minute and understand the range of information which encompasses a typical CV: Professional Summary/Biography Contact Details Academic Interests Educational Qualifications Professional Employment History, with Quantifiable Achievements Additional Courses Training Teaching Experience, if any Research/Lab Experience, if any Fieldwork during Graduation/Postgraduation Key Skills (Technical, Computer, Academic, Language, etc.) Publications Theses/Dissertations Professional Licenses and Certifications Awards Honors Lectures, Presentations Public Speaking Events Overseas Experience (Academic Professional) Public/Private Membership Hobbies/Interests Extra-curricular Activities References On the other hand, a Resume usually includes the following: Job Title Contact Details Professional Summary Key Skills Professional Experience Education Training Certifications Interests Hobbies (Optional) CV vs Resume: Examples In order to further clarify the difference between CV and Resume, here's an example of the latter: Down below you'll find an extract from a CV containing additional information pertaining to Publications, Memberships, Seminars, Projects, etc. Got more queries around your Resume or CV? Still can't take a call on which one to send? Give us a shout out in the comments section and we'll get back to you within 24 hours!
